Pecksniffian

Sounds dirty, doesn’t it?

I used this as my Word of the Day in the library a few weeks ago.

“Pecksniffian” is an adjective, meaning “hypocritically and unctuously affecting benevolence or high moral principles”, according to dictionary.com. The origin of the word comes from a character (Seth Pecksniff) in the novel Martin Chuzzlewith by Charles Dickens.

We try to find a picture or image to illustrate the word. I wanted to use a picture of President Obama, but I thought that might be a little controversial. Then I thought that maybe I’d make a montage of politicians, since most every politician I know or am aware of displays pecksniffian behavior. I wound up using a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger since his peccadillo was the main headline of the day I used that word.

Hmmm, I think I just came up with tomorrow’s word – peccadillo.
