Harley Swiftdeer Reagan is part Cherokee Indian, part Irish. He’s a distant relative of President Ronald Reagan. He’s a former Marine who opposed the Vietnam War. He’s spent time in jail, and has been a spokesman for American Indian causes. His life experiences were the inspiration for the “Billy Jack” movies in the early 1970’s. Above all, he is an accomplished martial artist and a medicine man.
Harley Swiftdeer Reagan has a strong martial arts background. He started in Judo when he was 8 years old. He has spent nearly 50 years learning and teaching martial arts. He finished 4th on the 1964 Olympic Judo team. He was World Jiu-Jitsu Champion from 1967 to 1970. He holds belts in 14 different martial arts disciplines.
Harley Swiftdeer Reagan began his medicine man education under the leadership of his grandmother, again at the age of 8. A medicine man combines the skills of leader, doctor, magician, lawyer, healer, priest, psychologist, teacher, and parent into one person. He continued to learn the ways of a medicine man from various teachers; medicine men and women known as the “Twisted Hairs”. Reagan became a “Twisted Hairs” elder in 1992.
